JOZINI LOCAL MUNICIPALITY HOSTS ANTI-FRAUD AND CORRUPTION AWARENESS SESSION.

21/06/2024- Under the leadership of His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Mfananaye Mathe, Jozini Local Municipality successfully hosted an Anti-Fraud and Corruption Awareness Session for councillors and management. This crucial event was conducted in partnership with the KZN Office of the Premier and KZN COGTA, demonstrating a strong commitment to ethical governance.

The primary objective of the session was to equip councillors and select staff members with the knowledge and skills necessary to prevent and identify fraudulent activities within the municipality. The emphasis was on fostering a culture of integrity, transparency, and accountability to enhance public trust and ensure the efficient use of municipal resources.

The session began with a warm welcome from the Speaker, Cllr D.P Mabika, who spoke on behalf of His Worship the Mayor, Cllr Mfananaye Mathe. Cllr Mabika highlighted the municipality’s dedication to combating fraud and corruption, reinforcing the leadership’s stance on upholding ethical standards.

Following the welcoming remarks, Municipal Manager Mr. JA Mngomezulu outlined the day’s purpose. He stressed the importance of understanding the mechanisms of fraud and corruption and implementing effective measures to prevent such practices within the municipal framework.

Two compelling presentations were delivered by esteemed experts:

1. Mr. Lwandile Bebula from KZN COGTA: Mr. Bebula’s presentation focused on the legal and regulatory aspects of anti-fraud measures, providing practical insights into identifying and mitigating fraud risks. He emphasized the importance of compliance with relevant legislation and the role of internal controls in safeguarding municipal operations.

2. Mr. Bongani Khuzwayo from the KZN Office of the Premier: Mr. Khuzwayo’s presentation highlighted best practices in governance and the ethical responsibilities of public officials. He shared case studies and real-world examples to illustrate the devastating impact of corruption on communities and the essential steps to foster an environment of transparency and accountability.

The session was highly interactive, with councillors and municipal officials engaging in discussions and posing questions to the presenters. This collaborative approach ensured a thorough understanding of the topics covered and allowed attendees to share their experiences and perspectives.

The Anti-Fraud and Corruption Awareness Session organised by Risk Management and Compliance Unit underscored the Jozini Local Municipality’s unwavering commitment to ethical governance. By proactively addressing fraud and corruption, the municipality aims to build a robust framework that promotes integrity and trust among its constituents and staff.

The session concluded with a reaffirmation of the municipality’s dedication to maintaining high ethical standards and the ongoing commitment to capacity building and continuous improvement. The collaborative efforts with the KZN Office of the Premier and KZN COGTA highlight the importance of joint initiatives in achieving these goals.
